Training in the Bahamas

It was a little crazy trying to keep up my running during our week staying on a sailboat in the Bahamas. I had to get creative... this picture was on a beach where Dave and I just kept running back and forth the length of the beach until we got our mileage in. Good thing our GPS worked there!

READ!

This is a must read for all you runners out there...
He ran a ragnar race by himself, the whole 200 miles! I thought we were crazy for doing this race!

totally inspiring, I never read (really, like not a book since i was forced to read in high school), and I couldn't put this book down.

I have to admit there's a little language and stuff you girls might not want to read about but overall amazing!

Let me know if you want to barrow my copy!

Ok, so I am throwing a few recipes on here for fun. The Power balls are a perfect pick-me-up snack and the quinoa salad is great for a side dish or snack! I would also love to see any yummy recipes you all have:)
Power balls:
Mix together 1 c peanut butter and 1 c honey until smooth. Gradually add in 3 1/2 c old fashioned oats and 1/2 c ground flaxseed or wheatgerm. Add 1 c chocolate chips and 1/2 c dried fruit (any combo) and 1/2 c chopped nuts. Wet hands in cold water (to help prevent sticking) and roll into ping-pong sized balls. (U can add more oats depending on how you like it.) Layer wax paper between rows to prevent sticking and refrigerate or freeze.

Quinoa Salad:
Cook quinoa according to directions (you can sub veggie or chicken broth for water if u want). I usually use a little less liquid than it calls for. After it's cooled add in: chopped red onion, garlic, 1 tsp ground cumin, lemon pepper, diced bell peppers (I like to saute mine in olive oil first), canned corn, canned black beans, chopped cilantro, fresh lime juice, salt and pepper. You can really mix in whatever you like, we sometimes add diced tomatoes, diced jalapeno, feta cheese, scallions, whatever we have on hand that sounds good! And it's all to taste, so that's why there's no real measurements:)
Enjoy!

Running girl accessories

A few of us were talking recently about getting running visors to help when it starts to heat up. I've been poking around and found this website. It has a cute running girl logo on hats, visors, socks, bags, etc.. I particularly like the shirt that says "running is my happy hour". Thought you might be interested too.

Team Doc

HI Divas!
Every successful, well performing, amazing team has a team doc. So, I thought we deserve to have one too! To help keep us healthy, balanced and running our best, my Dad has offered his Chiropractic, sports medicine, herbal/nutrition expertise to our Diva teams. He can help prevent injury, treat injury, care for the body as a whole. He can help beat and repair muscle exhaustion, energy depletion, and fatigue to truly help you perform at your best. For our teams, he is offering 30 min appointments for HALF OFF, only $20!!
He is what helps keep me going and feeling great! Don't just take my word for it... talk to April Shouse, Marie Zambrana, or Amanda (Summerhays) Moore.
I'd be happy to chat more about what he can do to help you too, or just give him a call!

What A Way To Start The Day!

It was fun starting the day off with all of you! I hope you are feeling well after crawling back into bed for a few hours, and your hot bath. (we can dream...) A special thanks to Cherie for organizing the runs, maps included. That's so Cheri!

I didn't catch up to some of you, but for those who ran near me, the following are this morning's run results:

Teams

I just looked at some of the 350 teams that are signed up for the race and I saw some fun familiar ones. Don't panic, but "Panic @the Rosebowl" is back. "Ben Stiller" will be disappointed that Stephanie and Rachel are not on the team. The "white trash" HI Mt. Men are back. Watch out for the returning "Sneaker Divas". One of them last year was a "Diva" in the not-so-nice sense. If you pass them, don't stop to chat. Just pass. ;) The team with my favorite name that maybe I shouldn't like so much ("Does this skirt make my butt look fast?") is back. If you have some time on your hands, it's fun to look at the creative names (warning- there are some dirty ones):
http://www.ragnarrelay.com/race/southerncalifornia/results/teams/53
Some fun ones: "Oh-shins 12", "We don't pass slow runners, we eat them" (yikes!), "Wii not fit", "The knights who say knee pain" (Monty Python reference), and "Too stupid not to start, too stubborn not to finish".
Can't wait to have new experiences with new teams!

Knee Injuries and IT Strength Training

Found this helpful. Thought it might be a good one to have on hand. If you haven't had IT band trouble, you might in the future. There is a really great strength exercise to prevent the injury if you scroll down. It is a little tricky, but it seems to really help.

Recent Routes and Results

The following are the results of the Saturday run, for those of you who ran with (or ahead of) me. Worth mentioning- I did not stop my watch when we paused to regroup, find fellow divas, and when I stopped to tie my shoe.

Finding Balance

A scripture thought for the day. Hebrews 12:1, "...and let us run with patience the race that is set before us."

Keep Running!

If The Shoe Fits...Buy The Socks!

All the fast people are wearing them. Really! Rachel will even tell you they are the reason she loves running...or something close to that. They are the Balega ankle socks. I don't have a pair (yet) but have come to the conclusion that because all the fast people wear them, they must make you faster. Problem solved!
Now, if they only helped you climb hills...

Leave Your Heels at Home!

It's painfully obvious, the right shoe makes a difference. A true Diva has already begun considering what shoe to wear to this grand occasion. Might I make a suggestion? If the word "pronate" sounds like a country inhabited entirely by paid athletes, then you would be wise to head over to Fleet Feet Sports in Roseville. The salespeople do a great job of checking out how your foot rolls when it hits the ground. They can get you on the path toward the right shoe. No purchase required!

Welcome, Divas!

As the chatter for Ragnar increases, I thought it might be helpful for us to have a site where we can all share our progress, tips, suggestions, and words of encouragement. It's going to be a fun few months of training and it's nice to know we have fellow "Divas" to help us out along the way. The end result is so worth it! Where else can you run with a viking, Wonderwoman, indians, and whatever that girl in the cheetah shorts was. (you know the one I'm talking about!) Laugh now, but you'll be the one rocking a tutu or an apron!
